Why-How-What

A lot of people do not like change. Educators, myself included, get set in their ways. Leading change in an organization will be hard and challenging, but we can do it. Our students deserve an environment that allows them to be creative and passionate learners. The first step in successfully leading a change in our school is to create a sense of urgency in order to minimize the complacency, negativity and anxiety that comes with change (Kotter, J. 2013). This step is crucial and everyone involved in the changes, need to know pretty early on, in other words, don't be secretive about the changes coming. Our peers and administrators need to be aware of the benefits of blended learning for our students as lifelong learners.

When leading a change in our school, we must also appeal to the heart and the mind. According to John Kotter, in the most successful cases of change were the ones that "work 60% on the heart side and 40% on the mind side" (2011). If we want blended learning to be successful, we must remember our why. If we want to bring blended learning to our school, we need to lead change by appealing to the heart and mind our peers. We come back to the class over and over again for many reasons, but mostly because we want to make a difference. We want to see progress, even if it’s a tiny step. Maybe incorporating blended learning will help alleviate some of our endless stress. I hope so.
